The treatment of pain continues to evolve as more is learned about this disorder. Evidence-based guidelines and practice recommendations have become abundant to assist the clinician in providing optimal patient care. A clear understanding of the pathogenesis of pain is vital to selecting rational pharmacotherapy and adjuvant nonpharmacological interventions when developing a treatment plan for a patient. This 2-hour session will review neurophysiology, nociception, and the pharmacology of frequently used analgesics. Additionally, individual pain syndromes will be reviewed with evidence-based recommendations provided when available.
