PAINWeek Course Preview: Alcohol Use Disorder and Chronic Pain

Give us a brief overview of your course at PAINWeek 2015?

Why should clinicians care if their patients drink? I will discuss the consequences of alcohol use disorder, including its impact on pain management. Participants will be introduced to screening methods for alcohol use with patients, and brief intervention strategies for patients who drink, including motivational interviewing techniques. I will also discuss how to refer for treatment of alcohol use disorder.

Who should plan to attend?

Practitioners who treat patients with pain—which is basically any clinician.

What will course participants learn that they can take back to their practices?

First, an appreciation of the impact of alcohol use on pain management. Secondly, they will learn some ways to talk with their patients about their alcohol use. And thirdly, some techniques of motivational interviewing to use with their patients who drink.

What is the “essential pearl” that PAINWeek participants will miss, if they miss your course?

How to tactfully bring up and address alcohol use with patients.

As you review the Schedule at a Glance and design your course agenda for PAINWeek 2015, plan to make Dr. Weaver’s program a part of your PAINWeek experience! We look forward to your participation at PAINWeek: The National Conference on Pain for Frontline Practitioners!
