Pain Psychologist Surveys Opioid and Nonopioid Alternatives for Chronic Pain

An interview published last week in the National Pain Report with Beth Darnall, PhD, offers another perspective on the appropriate role of opioids in the treatment of chronic noncancer pain. Dr. Darnall’s recent book, Less Pain, Fewer Pills is a patient-oriented resource that practitioners may want to refer for their patients.

Writing as a pain psychologist, the author outlines actionable information on managing pain without medications, and additionally provides opioid education to patients to make informed choices about the engagement of opioid therapy. Read the interview with Dr. Darnall here. A review of Dr. Darnall’s book was also published in the Spring issue of the journal of the American Society of Pain Educators, Painview, and may be read here.
