Exploring the Uncertainties of Epidural Steroid Injections

Extensive research has shown mixed results concerning the effectiveness of epidural steroid injections either in providing long-term pain control or in reducing the need for surgery in cases of lower back pain. New findings from Johns Hopkins suggest that it may not be the steroids in spinal shots that provide pain relief, but the mere introduction of various fluids, including anesthetics and saline, to the space around the spinal cord.
