Pain Bytes: Helping Kids Help Themselves to Cope With Pain

Children in chronic pain often feel they are not believed, and often feel alone. Pain Bytes, part of Pain Management Network website, offers videos, fast facts, and a place to share stories. Originally designed for kids in rural Australia, the website is already going global. The research-based site is branching out with a Facebook page as well. Video segments include Introduction to Pain, Pain and Physical Activity, and Pain and School.

Connecting with others in pain helps children to feel that they are not alone. Parents may think kids are avoiding school. Medical tests may be inconclusive, but chronic pain may be “a disease itself.” One teen with cystic fibrosis commented on the fact that although she may look healthy, she’s in pain. The innovative site connects her to others, and exposes her to various ways of coping with pain.
