Researchers at the Miami VA Healthcare System and the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis have announced a Department of Defense funded study of the safety and efficacy of deep brain stimulation in patients with spinal cord injuries, to reduce pain and improve function. The technique, already proven as a treatment for Parkinson’s disease, involves implanting a pacemaker that transmits electrical pulses to a specific region of the brain. As such, the methodology can be translated to a clinical setting relatively quickly, if the trial results are promising. Read a news story about the technique and the planned research, here.
