Consultation, Education, and Patient Assessment are Among Nurses’ Contribution to the Team

In this video segment from OncLive, Jeri Ashley, RN discusses the multifaceted role of the oncology nurse in the management of breakthrough pain from cancer. The panel discussion includes PAINWeek faculty members Charles Argoff, MD, and Jeffrey Gudin, MD.

Jeri Ashley makes the point that many patients are more comfortable discussing their pain with a nurse, and it is therefore important for nurses to diligently relay this information back to the treating physician, and for physicians to be cognizant of the input available from nurses. In addition to being conduits for information, oncology nurses play key roles in patient education and patient assessment in the potential for medication misuse and abuse. Watch the segment here.
