Keynote Address, Awards, and Welcome Reception—Wednesday, September 7

Steven Passik’s professional life has spanned the spheres of both academia and industry. As such, he continues to maintain a unique perspective on the challenges faced by all stakeholders in the complex and fragmented world of pain management. While much attention has been given to the controversy surrounding opioid prescribing, Dr. Passik will examine the underpinnings of this state of affairs—namely, the healthcare system itself, ie, its lack of care coordination and the consequences that result in not embracing patient centered protocols. After a 25 year clinical and academic career devoted to cancer and non-cancer pain, and the interface of pain and addiction, Dr. Passik left academia for industry. Working first in urine drug testing and then pharma, Dr. Passik continues to be passionate about securing access to safe and effective pain medications, including controlled substances, and helping to outline the safest, risk stratified ways to incorporate them in to care. He has over 200 publications and has spoken nationally and internationally on the pain and addiction interface. He has been outspoken for the entirety of his career on trying to achieve the highest possible standard of care for the management of controlled substances in the treatment of chronic pain.
