Religious Observance Information

PAINWeek® is held annually during September, which is also known as Pain Awareness Month. September is recognized as Pain Awareness Month not only by patient advocacy and professional organizations, but also by more than 20 United States Governors and Mayors who made “September Is Pain Awareness Month” proclamations in 2009.

When selecting dates in September during which PAINWeek should be held, a number of elements are considered, including hotel and meeting space availability/pricing, pattern of meeting days, schedules of other pain-related meetings, holidays, and attendee preferences. Based upon feedback PAINWeek has received, we have selected Wednesday through Saturday as the ideal days for the majority of participants.

Based upon a number of factors, we were limited to September 8 – 11 for this year’s PAINWeek meeting. There are 14 religious holidays which occur in September, and we are aware that several of them occur during PAINWeek. Consideration was given to moving the meeting to October, even though that is not Pain Awareness Month, but it would have represented a significant increase in cost for our attendees due to higher hotel and transportation prices.

PAINWeek staff strives to meet the needs of our attendees to the best of our ability—whether that be through the curriculum we offer, scheduling of dates/times, faculty selection, or scheduling to avoid holidays that may be observed by our attendees.

In an effort to support any individuals who may have a personal or religious observance occurring during PAINWeek, we will have a nondenominational meditation room available for attendees from September 7 – 12, twenty-four hours per day.
